Alaska Modular Homes
There are several important considerations to
investigate before buying an Alaska modular home. Modular homes are
full size homes constructed in large building blocks in factories.
When all the blocks for a particular modular house are complete,
they are shipped to the permanent home site and assembled. There is
no visual difference between a modern modular home and a stick-built
home. Many attractive floor plans and styles are available. Before
you take the plunge to build a modular home in Alaska, be sure it is
right for you.
The weather is the first big consideration. Unless you absolutely
love the cold, snow and ice, think carefully whether you want to
live there year-round. There will be blizzards, arctic freezes, and
snow drifts a dozen feet high. Travel will be difficult or
impossible at times. Snow chains, shovels, and blowers will be your
new best friends. The scenery itself may be spectacular, but it you
wish you lived somewhere else every time you leave your new Alaskan
modular home, maybe you picked the wrong place.
The location of your modular home manufacturer is another potential
problem. Modular homes are traditionally cheaper than ordinary homes
because of several factors. The factory can negotiate large
discounts on bulk purchases of raw materials. Modular homes are
built with very little waste, making them even cheaper. Construction
crews are only required on site for a few weeks instead of months.
If your manufacturer must ship your modules hundreds or even
thousands of miles, you need to consider how much extra cost that
will add. You should reconsider your Alaskan modular home floor
plan, or find a manufacturer that is closer.
Modular homes are very energy efficient. The precision with which
they are built allows very little air infiltration into the
structure. Because of Alaska's fierce winters, additional insulation
might be necessary in your modular home. The roof will need to be
strong enough to carry large loads of snow and ice. Check with the
modular home manufacturer to see if these concerns are addressed by
the style you have chosen.
If none of these items causes you any concern, start looking for a
piece of land in Alaska. View the spectacular scenery, glorious
sunsets, and wildlife from the warmth and comfort of your Alaska
modular home.
