Modular Home Kit
Most people cannot assemble a desk, much less a
modular home kit. They would never contemplate building their own
house! However, that does not have to be true anymore. The modular
house kit contains nearly everything necessary for the handyman to
assemble an entire house from the parts in the kit. Manufacturers
claim that even a novice handyman can perform this miraculous feat.
Is it even possible to build a modular home from a kit?
Modular homes are those homes constructed in large rooms or sections
in a factory. Each module is essentially a giant building block that
is stacked and attached to the others to create an entire home.
Modular homes are every bit as attractive and comfortable as
traditionally built homes, and may even cost less. Most consumers
order a modular house and let the manufacturer complete it on their
property. The more adventurous home buyer can save some money by
assembling the modular house kit without the aid of the factory.
The key to construction a modular home from a kit is the structural
insulated panel. This panel, or SIP, is a structural sandwich of
oriented strand board outer layers with thick rigid foam insulation
between them. These modular panels are constructed to fit together
quickly and are easily handled by just a few people. The insulation
is built into these modular wall panels, and the oriented strand
board will not warp or bend like traditional timbers. These
interlocking panels create a modular home that is strong and energy
efficient.
The modular home panels have other features that make assembly from
a kit possible. The electrical chases and connections are built into
each panel. Cutouts and knockouts for pipes or other wires are
pre-installed or can be easily added with ordinary power tools. The
sandwich construction of the strand boards and form core are like a
giant I-beam, adding structural integrity. Each panel measures 4
feet by 8 feet, and weighs about 125 pounds. There are many floor
plans from which to choose a kit for your modular home.
Not everyone chooses the challenge of building an entire modular
home from a kit. If you do try it, you can always ask the
manufacturer for help if you have problems. This will cost extra,
though. Although some may question the assertion that even a novice
handyman can do it, some adventurous people just can't resist the
lure of the modular home kit.
